Beautifully Black & Bipolar is a platform to bring awareness to mental health issues, specifically among black Americans as we tend to neglect and ignore this issue.  Mental illness is particularly taboo in the black community and practically non-acknowledged in its culture. This is important to highlight as black women in America are leading in statistics that are not in our favor such as HIV/AIDS cases, poverty, breast cancer, heart disease, and we even lead in the most female lead households. So why not talk about the “stigma” that seems to have a direct correlation to these disadvantages.

  • Depression
  • Low self esteem
  • Promiscuity
  • Drug/alcohol abuse
  • Poverty
  • Mood swings/ irritability

It’s time to stop turning a blind eye and talk about these topics, how we feel, and what’s on our minds opposed to living with misunderstandings, misinformation, guilt, and especially shame.

My goal is to start an open dialogue while building a support group for those of us who are dealing with mental illness-or may know someone who is. Having a strong and healthy support system is vital in treatment. Treatment is well rounded; Mind, Body, & Soul. I’ll be posting blogs and some videos on these topics to help bring awareness, education, and support regarding mental health surrounding those three components. Mental health starts in our mind and a healthy body and soul supports it.

When we start to talk about it we began to defeat stigma with education and knowledge, instead of shadowing in the corner of shame.
